Oyster Shell

Oyster Shell–Derived Calcium Carbonate

Sustainable Innovation from Marine Byproducts

Every year, Korea’s aquaculture industry generates over 300,000 tons of oyster shells, most of which are left untreated, causing severe odor, storage, and environmental issues. KCM Korea has developed a patented process to transform this underutilized byproduct into high-purity calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and calcium chloride (CaCl₂)—delivering both environmental and economic value. By avoiding high-temperature calcination and applying chemical and filtration treatments, our process reduces energy consumption, lowers CO₂ emissions, and produces eco-friendly materials for diverse industries.

Key Features

Eco-Friendly Processing

Non-calcination technology minimizes carbon emissions and energy use.

Circular Economy Solution

Turns waste oyster shells into high-value industrial inputs.

High Purity

Over 95–97% CaCO₃ purity, customizable whiteness (85+ / 90+) and particle sizes (2–75 μm).

Versatile Product Lines

From general fillers to high-grade PCC for plastics, construction, food, and pharmaceuticals.

Product Line-Up

  1. Bio Calcium Carbonate (CaCO₃)

    • General-grade filler for plastics, construction, and PVC applications.

    • Controlled whiteness and particle size for tailored customer needs.

  2. High-Purity Calcium Carbonate (PCC)

    • Purity 97%+, designed for special plastics, food, and pharmaceutical use.

    • Domestic alternative to imported PCC, enabling import substitution and higher margins.

  3. Calcium Chloride (CaCl₂)

    • Derived from oyster shell reactions with HCl, producing 30% liquid CaCl₂, then dried into solid CaCl₂ (75%).

    • Used in de-icing agents, dehumidifiers, and moisture absorbers, replacing Chinese imports.

Applications

Construction Materials

Low-carbon fillers for concrete, cement, and composite products.

Plastics & PVC

Filler for cost reduction and improved mechanical properties.

De-Icing & Moisture Control

Solid CaCl₂ for roads, winter maintenance, and household use.

Food & Pharma

Ultra-pure calcium carbonate for dietary supplements, tablets, and specialized polymers.

Environmental & Market Impact

Environmental Benefit

Utilizes over 220,000 tons of untreated shells annually, mitigating odor and pollution.

Carbon Reduction

Non-calcination process reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional methods.

Market Growth

  • Plastics filler market: ~₩400B, ~280,000 tons annually.

  • De-icing CaCl₂ market: ~₩1500B annually in Korea.

  • High-purity PCC market: ₩200–300B, currently import-dependent
